Lots to like in this Brietling Chronomat, not least the Burgundy dial. Model reference 81950
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
This modern reimagining of the Chronomat was launched in 1984 with a slightly different logo. Model 81950 was updated in 1990 to a different design, and the burgundy dials seem to be from the last year of production in 1989.
CONDITION
The burgundy dial, this watches main USP, is in excellent order as are the golden subdials. The subdials compliment the pushers and screw down signed crown, and the overriders on the bezel. These overriders are a Breitling design classic, and they were first used on this Chronomat design – they went on to feature on many Breitling’s, and they do actually help turn the bezel so are not just cosmetic. The movement is a Valjoux 7750 as found in many watches even today. This reliably movement is easily serviced and if required spares can be bought without adding Breitling’s mark up. The case has a small mark between 11 and 12 which might come off, but we do not want to scratch the case. The gilt paint in the B of Breitling on the case back is missing. The leather strap is used but a good match and decent quality. A new strap can be fitted or included for free if preferred.
