HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The F1 range were launched in 1986, with the plastic cases, and metal cases and bracelets were introduced in 1987. They ran for seven years, but we believe this to be an earlier one as the crown is only signed Heuer – there are number so transitional models where TAG Heuer used crowns, caseback and bracelets that were still in stock but branded Heuer alone. Once these ran out everything was branded TAG Heuer, so this must be quite close to 1987.
CONDITION
These F1 watches were often people first ‘decent’ watch, but now it is harder to find ones in good condition. Too many of the earliest have cracked cases, as the plastic has become more brittle after 30 years, and many have the numerals on the bezel rubbed off. But we are very happy with this one. The glass is perfect, and the dial is superb. The hands and hour markers still have a good glow to them too. The bracelet is long enough for most wrists, and has the wetsuit extension still in place. We have cleaned the bracelet in our ultrasonic bath. Inside is an unsigned ETA 955.412 as we would expect, with quickset date.
