Certina and Volvo have a good history together. In 1977 Volvo gave each of their 60,000 employees an engraved Certina watch to celebrate Volvo’s first 50 years. The watch here was given to customers who had covered 100,000km in their Volvos.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The movement in this watch was made between 1985 and 1988, and we have the Certina catalogue for 1985/6 that this model doesn’t feature in. Therefore we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1987 or 1988.
CONDITION
We can not establish the exact criteria of how you got a Certina watch from Volvo when covering 100,000km – was within a certain time, or if you had a 100,000km service at a Volvo dealer? if you know more then please do let us know.
Inside the watch is a ETA 955.412 7 jewel movement with trimmer that you will also find in many other watches from decent brands. The case and bracelet are mainly stainless steel, with some gold highlights in the bracelet and bezel. These work well with the hands and hour markers on the very clean, slightly sparkly dial. The bracelet is clever in two ways – the gold plated centre links are not on the lower part of the bracelet, so do not show wear when they brush the desk. secondly the claps is sprung, so the bracelet constantly adjusts as your wrists swell slightly during the day, meaning maximum comfort. The slim case also helps with this. The crown is missing the plating on the tip, which would have contained the Certina logo, and there is a scratch on the unpolished case on the bottom right lug. The glass is very good.
