HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Heuer became TAG Heuer in 1985, and the Formula 1 watches were the first new model line to be launched as TAG Heuer in 1986. However the crown on this watch is stamped for just Heuer. These transitional watches were just using up parts already made for Heuer, but later watches had the crown signed TAG Heuer, so we believe this watch was made circa 1986.
CONDITION
At this price point for a TAG Heuer you should be prepared to make a few compromises. On this watch the bezel is worn, so that most of the numbers are unreadable. This is far from uncommon on the Formula 1 watches, and we do have others with better bezels but they are also more money. The bezel does still click unidirectionally. The dial is good, but where the lume glows on the dial still it doesn’t on the hands now. When you open the screw down case back you see an ETA movement that was standard fit later in the model series, which is stamped TAG Heuer and dated for 1996. We suspect this had a new movement around that date, which must have been done at a TAG Heuer service centre as they will not sell the branded movements to independents. The genuine rubber strap is new, and not cheap, but worth the extra. These are designed to fit over the top of wetsuits, but in the real world the strap is trimmed to suit your wrist size (unless you have 10″ wrists!). The glass is excellent.
