Looking unworn, this S.T. Dupont Laque de Chine (or Chinese Lacquer) is an interesting take on a tank watch.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Very few of these watches seem to have paperwork with them, but the one we did find said it was sold in 1985. All other information for this watch seems to just say mid eighties, so we are happy to go with circa 1985 as a likely production date.
CONDITION
S.T. Dupont are a prestigious France firm, known for making luxury goods, and the Laque de Chine was a line of cigarette lighters that were very popular, and this was the watch to match. Unworn doesn’t mean perfect. If you look closely you will see some damage has been done trying to lever off the case back. They were fortunate not to crack the lacquer on the case back, as the case back on this watch is removed by undoing the screws behind the watch strap. The watch also has lacquer on the shoulders on the case, and on the buckle too – none of these areas are damaged at all. You have the original crown, signed, and the original buckle fitted to a perfect croco pattern S.T. Dupont original brown leather strap. The strap is too short to fit a larger wrist – it doesn’t fit the 190mm wrist we use for photography, but that is fitting with the unisex size of the watch. The movement is a Swiss quartz ETA model, working perfectly, and we will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown, buckle and strap.
