HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The earliest Les Must de Cartier watches had manual winding movements, and they added quartz movements in 1982. By 1990 Cartier stopped the Les Must de range, so we have picked a mid point year.
CONDITION
In the mid seventies the management team at Cartier were facing two major issues. People were buying quartz watches, which were both cheaper to make and more accurate, and the price of gold had trebled. This meant producing there mainly manual wind gold cased watches was both very expensive and out of fashion, all at the same time. So in 1977 they launched the Les Must de Cartier range, deliberately targeting a wider market at a cheaper price point. Not only did the use ETA mechanical movements to keep the costs down, then later using their in house quartz movements, but they also made the cases from gold plated silver (also known as Vermeil). It was a huge success.
This watch has no chips to the sapphire cabochon set in the crown, and the 20 micron gold plating on the sides of the watch is still very good. The Cartier 157 quartz movement is running nicely, and we will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The dial does have some spotting that shows up worse on the enlarged photos than in real life. The blued hands are nice, and glass is free of scratches. The quality leather strap is new, and retains the original Cartier buckle. While the price of these watches has soared in the past ten years they still remain the most affordable way to get a Cartier on your wrist.
