This rare Ebel looks good on the outside with the diamonds, and fabulous on the inside with an ultrathin Frederic Piguet movement. Model reference 896043.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
We know that this movement is still in production, despite being first in production in 1925. But in 1985 it received upgrades that this watch has, such as increased beat and different antishock protection. But it is hard to be more accurate than that. Given the styling we think this is circa 1985, but if you know better then please do contact us.
CONDITION
Founded in 1911, Ebel are more know now for their Sportwave watches than high end dress watches. They don’t make many watches each year, so exclusivity is guaranteed, but we have yet to see a comparable watch available to this one.
So the case is 18k gold, and the dial has five diamonds on it, The bezel has a further 73 diamonds (to our count), so the outside is nice with ice without being brash. The watch is very slim – 4.1 mm is slimmer than some watch batteries – so it slips under a cuff effortlessly. The case size at 31mm is smaller than most men wear now, but it is in scale with thinness so wears well. Inside the watch is the Frederic Piguet calibre 21 movement. At just 1.75 mm thin this was the thinnest movement available in the World for over twenty years, until overtaken by the Audemars Piguet 2003 at 1.64 mm. The calibre 21 was used by Blancpain among others, and is also the base for the Patek Philippe 177. We are talking high horology here, and it is running beautifully. the crown has a cabochon stone in it, possible onyx. The buckle is gold plated and stamped for Ebel, and we have fitted a new strap. The glass has a few very slight marks, and the case is unpolished so will show some slight marks too, but nothing serious.
