Stylistically similar to the watch used on China’s first Antarctic mission, this Sea-Gull hand winder is an interesting alternative to most 80’s watches.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From a time where China was effectively closed to the west makes this difficult to research, but the Antarctic model seen here was dated for the expedition in 1984. This watch is very similar, but the case back on our watch is flatter. Given the lack of other information though we will go with circa 1984 as a likely production date.
CONDITION
Sea-Gull are better known today for their 1963 chronograph, which is remarkable value for money. But this is what would have been available to the Chines in the 1980’s. The ST5 movement could be tuned to different grades, including top end models for the railways and military, but this is the normal 19 jewel version. It is running well, and features an interesting pattern tot he bridges called commonly Sea-Gull stripes. This is all protected by a dust cover and sits inside a screw down case back (which does have some tool marks on it). The dial is nice, and the blue bird wing logo is a nice pop of colour. The logo also appears on the crown. In the west quartz watches were the thing to have, but these nicely made mechanical watches offer something more like 1960’s design and build in a later watch. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
