New Old Stock (NOS) watches don’t happen too often, but this Nivada may have been among the last produced by the original factory.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Nivada Grenchen was founded in 1926, and made some of the earliest automatic watches. They also made notable chronographs and divers watches, but they also struggled to adapt to the quartz crisis, and closed in the mid 198o’s after a brief attempt to use some quartz movements – it watches like this one that they tried to revive their fortunes, but unfortunately they had left it too late. The name has now been revived, so you can get new versions of the Antarctic, Chronomaster, Depthmaster and some others – but not this design. Going on the styling and technology, we think this is one of the last Nivada watches to leave the original factory (which might also explain why it never sold)
CONDITION
The strap is unworn – with no wear to the holes at all, and the blue case back sticker is in place without any wear to it. But this Nivada does have some marks to the case flanks, probably from not being stored correctly. The movement is signed Nivada 5650, but is Japanese. You might expect a Swiss company to only use Swiss movements, but when the Francs are running out you have to make choices. But they did spend money in other areas – the crown and buckle are signed, and when you make things bespoke it costs more. The plating is 20 microns too, when their competitors may have used 10 microns. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The original strap is included, but the inside of the leather has delaminated. We could fit a new strap if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown, and buckle.
