This Porsche Design by IWC watch is in wonderful condition, good enough for the IWC Museum in Schaffhausen in our opinion.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From contacting IWC and showing them the watch and giving them the serial numbers on the case back we can date this watch to being probably made in 1982. IWC also launched the Ocean 2000 in 1982, which was the the companies first Titanium watch.
CONDITION
Porsche Design first started working with IWC in 1978, and the combination of the two companies made some interesting watches. A good history of Porsche Design watches can be read on Hodinkee here. This watch is very unusual in that the case and bracelet is made from anodised aluminium, finished in olive green (this was described as NATO green in some catalogues, but this type of watch was never military issued). The use of eloxed aluminium makes this watch incredibly light – all in the watch weight just 44 grams. The bracelet is a good length, and has 14k gold inserts. The clasp is signed with the pd porsche design logo, but the crown features the fish symbol that IWC use to signify the watch was waterproof when new. Under the screw down case back is an IWC 2250 movement that is all working perfectly.
