The St. Moritz from Chopard is a luxury stainless steel sports watch that you rarely see. Model reference 8056.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The St. Moritz was Chopard’s first steel sports watch, and when it was launched in 1980 it sold 1,000 watches on the first day – unheard of for Chopard. In 1981 they had two slightly different editions, one for Golf and one for Tennis, so we believe this was made circa 1981.
CONDITION
In 1980, gold was at historic highs and this was driving even the best watchmakers to consider other materials. Also critical to the development of the St. Moritz models were the success of steel sports watches from other top brands, such as the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the Patek Philippe Nautilus. So Chopard came up with their own steel sports model with integrated bracelet, and the St. Moritz was born. They have been overlooked for a while, but the hugely successful modern Alpine Eagle models have bought the spotlight on the St. Moritz predecessors. The size and movement is perfect for the 1980’s – slim, discreet and powered by a quartz movement. These Tennis models have a net pattern of interweaving lines like a net, as well as the cross rackets above the date at 6. Everything is working correctly. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner, which is done via removing the bezel and glass – the screws in the bezel are functional and not for show. The bracelet is quite long and our sister website, SpareLinks.com, may have extra links if required. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath.
