This is a high end Heuer split seconds, or rattrapante, stopwatch and appears to be a rare model. Model reference 522.413
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From some research we can not find this watch in the 1978 Heuer catalogue, not in the 1983 catalogue, but we have found it listed in the 1980 catalogue (pictured). It could be possible that the watch was available in 1979, 1981 or 1982 but we don’t have the catalogues to check, so circa 1980 is the most likely date of production. Heuer were also an official timing supplier to the 1980 Summer Olympics, so who knows what this stopwatch could have been used for!
CONDITION
Heuer made their reputation with making high quality stopwatches, and this is one of the most complex ones they ever made. The movement has three hands in the centre to measure seconds, split seconds and minutes, and a window at the bottom of the dial to measure hours. The window at the bottom of the dial is familiar to all stopwatch collectors – Heuer used it on their three button Monte Carlo stopwatches that were used in rally cars and by the RAF (and now fetch up to £1800 for a good one). The window counts up to 12 hours. We have been trying to think why you might need a stopwatch that measures hours, minutes, seconds and split seconds, but it could have been used for motor racing or even marathon running. We are sure there are other uses too, including science and film. The back of the base metal case has a light inscription that we don’t understand. The 7 jewel 7712 movement is clean and running well. The rubber protective case was reference number 54 and was an optional extra when new.
