HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Raymond Weil were founded in 1976, during the height of the quartz crisis, which was a very brave move which has paid off. Almost every watch they produced in the 1980’s was quartz powered from what we can see, and with the styling of this watch looking a little like the 1979 Piaget Polo we think this was also from circa 1979.
CONDITION
The bracelet and the case is similar to the Piaget Polo, but the dial could take some inspiration from the Piaget stone dials. Whereas Piaget would use solid gold and semi precious stones, the Raymond Weil gives the look without the cost. So this case is plated rather than gold, and the dial looks to be painted like stone rather than cut from a stone. The gold plating is worn in several places, and the lacquer on the dial is crazed too, but it doesn’t cost £10,000 either. The bracelet is quite long and we have seven extra links that could be fitted to extend it if needed. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. The movement is hand wound via the crown, which has a cabochon stone set into it. The Movement is made by ETA, but stamped R. Weil so we know it is original to the watch.
