This very scarce Eberhard &Co Royal Matic is in very good condition and must have annoyed Audemars Piguet! Model reference 17175.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Thankfully we have managed to find a 1979 catalogue featuring the Royal Matic watches, which we have included a picture of. This coincides with the Bulova ‘Royal Oak‘, another watch that clearly took a lot of styling clues from the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak – these Bulova watches are more common than the Eberhard and good ones are often over £2,000.
CONDITION
Eberhard &Co. are one of the less well known names outside the world of watch collectors, but their pieces are fought over in auction rooms around the World. Their history goes back to 1887, and you can read more about them here.
This watch has the ETA 2671 movement, and we have the card to show this watch was serviced in 2015. It has quick set date via the screw down crown, and runs at 28,800 bph. The movement was also used by Longines, Mido, Movado, Tissot and Zenith among others, so is of fine quality. The case is gold plated, which has stood up very well. The first centre link on the original bracelet has some tool marks, but the original clasp is still very good. The dial is beautiful – the pattern is tiny ‘E‘ Eberhard logos. The hands are original – the whole watch looks completely original and the glass is clear and free of marks. We have never seen another, so if you want a good one then either buy this one or be prepared for a long wait – there is only one other one for sale currently that we can find, and that has the quartz movement.
