A relatively early quartz watch from Accurist, the UK’s number one selling watch brand. Model reference 118.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Information on Accurist watches of this period is patchy – if you are lucky you might find an advert, but we have not been lucky in this instance. However the same movement was used in the Glycine Airman Quartz, which was launched in 1979, so we have estimated this watch was made around the same time.
CONDITION
Stylistically, there is a lot going on here. Having a barrel shaped crystal and dial does make this a different looking piece, but the dial is nicely balanced, helped by having the calendar window at 6. The way that the word QUARTZ is emblazoned across the dial may at first seem strange, but quartz was the technology everyone wanted in the 1970’s and it was still quite new. It’s nice to see the case on this watch is all stainless steel, with a screw down back, where we might have suspected a cheaper chrome case instead. There are marks on the case, with the worst being at 4.30 as shown in the video. The movement is the ESA (latterly ETA) 980.111, and what we wouldn’t want to see is this good Accurist broken up for the movement to fix a more expensive brand, as that doesn’t seem fair on the watch. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The original, signed bracelet is quite long has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath.
