An unusual Sekonda in a large case, with day and date at 6. This model is sometimes known as ‘The Fridge’.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the styling and the production dates of the Slava movement, we estimate the production date of this watch to being circa 1978. We have found a Sekonda brochure for the watch in a 1977 catalogue, and the Russian Slava version of the same watch from the 1979 catalogue, so we are confident we are very close.
CONDITION
This is an interesting watch and far from average in any sense. Obviously the case is not round or square, and has hidden lugs which make the case appear even longer and chunkier. A very knowledgeable collector (and, we are happy to say, customer of ours) has the Slava versions on his website, and adds the moniker ‘Fridge’, presumably because of the chunky styling. But on the wrist it doesn’t feel that big – it is only 10mm thick and 36mm wide. Another interesting thing with this watch is the Slava 26 jewel 2428 movement. It has a larger balance and twin barrels, and a push button at 2 for quick setting the date. This is set using a fingernail, and is usually the first thing to stop working on this movement if it gets dirt building up behind it. On this example it is working fine, and this is shown in the video. The day wheel is in English, and is not quick set. The case shows wear and the odd scratch, as well as uniform marks on the back of the lugs that probably indicate this was on a bracelet before. The crown has lost some plating too. The leather strap has some wear but is a quality item with stitching that matches the dial colour really well, so we have left it.
This watch will be supplied with our Certificate of Authenticity.
