This Certina Jubile (often stylised as Jubilé) makes an ideal dress watch for those not wanting a gold or gold plated case. Model reference 396 3798 41.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The movement in this watch was launched in 1965, and is still in production today. Certina watches can be accurately dated up until 1974, when they changed the reference numbers. This watch has a later reference number, so must be after 1974, but is also a manual wind dress watch and by the late 1970’s most manufacturers were switching to quartz for thin dress watches. Circa 1976 feels about right.
CONDITION
Certina were founded in 1888, and the Jubile line were probably introduced to celebrate an anniversary – but no one seems to know exactly when that was. It doesn’t matter, as this is a nice watch. The stainless steel case is thin as it should be, and the blue dial and white hands are a little different to the more standard silver or gold dials normally found on dress watches. The white hands against the blue dial make the time very legible too. The movement is stamped Certina 396, but there is actually a rebranded Peseux 7001 that is running very well. These are what you hope to find in a thin, two handed dress watch and there is a reason that they are still in production today (albeit the Peseux name has changed to an ETA7001). The case has a few marks, but that is because it is not new and hasn’t been machined polished in the past. The synthetic leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown.
