A mystery dial watch at an affordable price, this Lucerne men’s manual wind watch was always trying to look good for little money.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The watch case and movement are stamped Chancellor, which is a name first registered in 1954. But we can see from the movement this watch was made in the mid 1970’s, and stylistically was designed to look like Jaeger-LeCoultre or Longines watches from the 1950’s. So it was retro from day one!
CONDITION
If you search for mystery dial watches on Chrono24 you will find that for a few thousand pounds you can get a gold JLC with diamonds, or for about half that you can find a Longines. This Lucerne was designed to look like them, but more attainable to most people. So this uses cheaper materials – the case is chrome plated and not 18k gold for example, and the movement is a calibre 013P-21 pin pallet. We have not tested the stones but again they are highly likely not to be diamonds. But the overall look is very appealing. The term mystery dial comes from the fact the hands are replaced with clear discs, each with a marker on them to point to the hour and minutes. There are no other modifications needed to a standard movement. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
