Proudly made in France, this UFO style watch from LIP came at a time where the company had – uniquely – been bought by its workers.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
UFO cases were popular in the 1970’s mainly, and as the movement used in this watch was launched in 1975 we have no reason not to presume the watch wasn’t made around the same time. It can not have been made earlier than this. Lip have been making watches since 1867.
CONDITION
Lip, like a lot of watch manufacturers, really suffered during the quartz crisis of the 1970’s. But rather than lay off the staff, the staff injected their own Francs into the company and it was run as a cooperative. So instead of finding a quartz movement, you get a traditional automatic. The movement is stamped 7525/5, which is part of the Duramatic 25 jewel range from Durowe. It is ticking away nicely and also has quick set date. The case is bead blasted for a matte finish, and it looks really good. The minimalist dial is clean, with nice raised hour markers, and while the bracelet is not stamped Lip on the clasp it is stamped with their stylised logo on the folding part of the clasp. The acrylic crystal has no chips, but it does have a few light scratches in the photographs – these were polished off before the video was filmed. The bracelet is quite long and it can be adjusted along the clasp without spring bars being needed. We demonstrate how to adjust the bracelet in the video.
