A manual winding Spaceman Audacieuse (which means Invincible) in great, original condition. One of the the funkiest watches ever made.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The original, oval 7s Spaceman watches were designed by Andre Le Marquand, an artist and architect, with the brief to make something different. He understood the assignment! The oval watches use a unique corfam strap, which might be difficult to obtain now, but the 1974 square case like we have here came on a bracelet. These were also made under license by various brands like Omax, Zeno, Fortis and others.
CONDITION
The elephant in the room for these Spaceman watches, especially for one in such good condition, is that there are fakes out there. However we have compared this watch with all the information out there and are completely happy it is real. It has the black, extended crown that the fakes don’t, all the markings are perfect and the clasp is correctly stamped. The tritium lume on hands and dial is also faded to cream and is no longer glowing – you can get aged lume, but it is bright and it shouldn’t be – the T<25 on the dial refers to the half life of tritium, and if the tritium is nearly fifty years old it should barely glow. So it is right.
The chromed case is very good, with just one scratch on the left hand side, the acrylic ‘visor’ had just the smallest of marks, and the dial and hands are as good as you get. The bright orange calendar wheel isn’t the most easy to read, but matches the second hand well (and the fakes sometimes have white date wheels – a dead giveaway!). This does wear far larger than the dimensions suggest – square watches always cover more wrist – so please bear this in mind. It will be hard to find a better version of this watch anywhere.
