With not another single example photographed on the internet, this Zenith with a Malachite dial qualifies as rare.  Model reference 01.0020.505

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

From the model number on the case back we know this is post 1970, when Zenith switched to this format.  The movement was first used in 1972, and a similar (mechanically) electronic Zenith featured in the Rossler book on the company says circa 1973 for that one, and who are we to argue!

CONDITION

Malachite is a natural stone that forms above copper deposits.  And Zenith are not alone is recognising its beauty for dials – a quick search on Chrono24 shows watches from Rolex, Chopard, Cartier, Piaget and Patek Philippe among others.  Using this hard stone means that each dial is unique, as each stone is unique itself.  This Zenith uses two semi circles of Malachite with a black filler piece, possibly as the day window cuts into the space.  The movement is this watch is the electronic ESA 9164, rebranded here the Zenith 505.  It uses the Bulova tuning fork technology, as acknowledged on the inside of the case back.  Sometimes described as the Rolls-Royce of electronic movements, this beats at 300hZ, where a standard watch is more like 3hZ.  This makes the smoothest of seconds hands.  You also have day and date, both of which can be quickset, and the day is in Italian.  It is all working correctly and we will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner.  The stainless steel case is good, with only minor marks, and the crystal has a few scratches.  The bottom section of malachite has a crack, and the dial has some dents inthe silver section.  The hands are good, and the signed crown is still fitted.  The green leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.

This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
