This Hamilton Electronic succeeded the pioneering Hamilton Electric watches, but used a Swiss movement.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Hamilton stopped producing their in house Electric calibres in 1969, and this movement was made between 1970-1975. We have picked a mid point, but can not be more accurate than that. There is an inscription on the case back for 25 years service from Strouss, the leading Ohio department store, but the date of 5-7-56 makes no sense. Unless we presume the watch was sold as old stock 25 years after the date shown in 1981, but that is an assumption and not evidence, so will will stick with circa 1973.
These transistorized movements had a relatively short production life. They were cheaper to make than the hummer electronic movements used by companies like Bulova, but not as accurate. Then Quartz movements became both cheaper and more accurate, leaving the transistorized movements redundant. They are however an interesting stage in Horology, and remain reliable and collectible. The movement fitted here is branded Hamilton Electronic 683, but it is actually an ESA (ETA) 9154. It has thirteen jewels and a semi quickset date (Midnight – 23:00 – Midnight). The second hand isn’t as smooth as the Bulova Accutron, but it still ‘sweeps’ round not jump in one second increments like a quartz watch would. The dial is very clean, and the case is 10k gold filled and in great shape. Gold filled cases are much thicker than gold plate, so wear is not an issue. The acrylic crystal is great, and the leather strap is new.
