This Avia Swissonic will tempt many electronic watch collectors due to the condition and funky 1970’s shape.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

The ESA 9154 movement inside this watch was made between 1970 and 1975.  In 1970 it was the first movement to use a balance and a transistor, and by 1975 this technology was outdated – things moved fast in the 1970s!  We have picked a mid date of circa 1973 for this watch.

CONDITION

The transistor switched mechanisms were a half way house between traditional mechanical movements, and quartz watches.  They are not hummers, like the Bulova Accutron or Omega f300, but these tick at 28.8kbph.  The battery powers the transistors, that act instead of pallet forks to regulate the beat of the watch.  You can read more about the technology here.

The watch is running very well, and we have changed the battery for the correct Renata 344.  The red second hand sweeps round nicely, and the gold plated case is in very nice condition.  The only real negative is the crown has lost some plating.  The dial is very good, and the extra long leather strap is new and could be swapped for a different colour if required.

This watch will be supplied with a presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
