Universal Geneve turned to the the designer of their Polerouter watch for the Shadow series – Gerald Genta.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The serial number on the case back is obscured by the original case back sticker, but as we know the movement wasn’t introduced until 1972 and we only have serial number dating information for Universal Geneve watches up to 1968 we have not tried to remove the case back sticker.
CONDITION
Ultra thin watches are usually under 5mm thick, and this was just a bit over. But the movement used in this watch, calibre 2-66, was the thinnest automatic movement in production anywhere between 1966 and 1978, so we will forgive the extra millimetre. It does this by using a microrotor instead of a full rotor, which is an engineering solution that needs to be designed like this form day one. As well as being clever, it is also well finished with circular Côtes de Genève striping and also has 26 jewels. You could get a White shadow, Gold Shadow and Gilt Shadow in the model range. The Gilt Shadow has a 20 micron gold plated case, with strong C-Shaped lugs – the same style of the Omega Constellation, which was also designed by Genta. There is a small amount of wear to the underside on the bottom right lug, but it is not easy to see. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown.
