An all stainless steel case and Valjoux chronograph movement, this Swiss Emperor is a very attractive proposition.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Swiss Emperor were registered as a brand in 1959, but the movement used in this watch was available between 1969 and 1978. Given the styling, and that the quality of materials used is higher than normal for the later seventies*, we estimate this was made earlier around 1972.
*In the later seventies the quartz crisis was hurting Swiss brands, so many cut back on small details that this watch has to save money.
CONDITION
There is what remains of a sticker on the case back, and you may wonder why we haven’t cleaned this off? Well given the condition of the rest of the watch, this may have been on the watch since it was new and shows how little the watch has been worn. The C shaped case, with it’s strong lugs, is all stainless steel and only has light surface scratches but no dings. The watch has a bidirectional bezel, with telemetre scale, which again shows no wear – this is one of the most vulnerable parts on a watch and usually the first to show wear to the black bezel coating. The blue dial is good, with just a very slight part flake around some one the applied hour markers. The dial has four colours, which is again a sign of quality – each colour is a separate process and has the potential to go wrong. Inside the case is a manual wind Valjoux 7734 movement. This seventeen jewel movement was also used by Heuer, Breitling, Tissot and a host of other makes, so it is in good company. Everything is working well and resetting correctly. The rubber tropic style strap is what the watch arrived on and could be original, so we have cleaned it and left it on. It is easy to swap to a leather strap if you prefer.
