A sporty stainless steel and bracelet Omega Geneve with a delicious dial.  Model reference 366.0822.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

From the serial number on the paperwork this tells us the watch movement was made in 1971.  The sale date shows 1973.  But here is the rub – the automatic winding parts of the movement have been replaced at a later date, and that means the serial number on the watch doesn’t exist.  The model number (366.0822) on the paperwork is also different to the caseback, but for a very similar model  It is the number on the paperwork that is correct, as evidenced on Omega’s website.  It could be the case back was swapped at the same time as the auto winding mechanism – if the original case back was lost or damaged it could have damaged the old auto winding mechanism, as they are in close proximity.  Given the production range of the movement the dates all fit, and this watch model was launched in the 1972 International Collection, we are safe to say circa 1972.

CONDITION

When the watch had the auto winding mechanism replaced long before we owned the watch the watchmaker probably used the mechanism from a Tissot 2451 – the sister calibre to Omega 1441 fitted to this watch.  You can see the parts are a different colour.  The Omega 1451 and Tissot 2451 have a push crown quick set date, that needs to be pushed repeatedly to advance.  In honesty it is not the best system, and was dropped on later models.  On this example it does work occasionally, but we are selling it as not working.  The date does advance at midnight normally okay, and the watch keeps good time.  The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath and is long enough for most people.  The dial is a very dark grey, appearing black in some lights but is more interesting than a straight black dial.  The acrylic glass is new, and signed with the Ω symbol in the centre.
