A New Old Stock (NOS) Nelco watch with a Pat Pending case we haven’t seen before.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Nelco were registered in February 1971, which was a tough time to be starting a watch company. Very little information is available about them, so we are estimating this watch was made the year after. That also suits the styling perfectly.
CONDITION
The watch comes to us as New Old Stock, unworn, so the condition is superb. The case back is marked Pat(ent) Pend(ing), and this is because the black plastic case back also holds the movement and dial, in a similar way to Roamer watches used to be – the whole back, movement, dial and glass slides out of the bezel as one unit. While this is great for waterproofing, it does make it hard to access the movement and rather than damage the case we have decided not to photograph the movement – there are slight tool marks on the plastic already that we did, hence we stopped. We can tell you the movement is running at 18,000 bph, 0.1 beat error and an amplitude of 275 degrees, which is all happy. It is losing about 1 minute a day, and the day is set by winding the crown forward and the date is set by winding the crown backwards. But this watch is more about the condition and the looks rather than absolute horological details, and here is scores highly. The orange seconds hand, just like the Omega Dynamic of the time, looks great and the fixed bezel catches and reflects light superbly. It is unlikely you will ever see another Nelco watch like this, and certainly not in this condition. The leather strap is new.
