With a 23 jewel automatic movement from then sister company Zenith, this Movado Tempo-Matic HS288 has looks and history.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Movado joined with Zenith and Mondia in 1969, so this watch has to be later than that date. Zenith first launched the movement used in this watch in 1972, so again this watch mush be later than that. We have no further evidence for this Movado, so we are saying it was made circa 1972 or shortly afterwards.
CONDITION
Movado were a pioneering watchmaking company with a great history, but occasionally that is not enough for companies to survive. So they teamed up with Mondia and Zenith in 1969 to share some resources, up to and including even the legendary El Primero movement. This watch therefore has a Zenith 2562PC movement, but badged for Movado. Running at a modern, but faster than average for 1972, 28.8kbph this 23 jewel movement has a smooth sweep second hand and a date at 6. The blue dial is very good, with interesting hour markers. The case is unpolished and carries a few marks here and there – this is quite a chunky watch so it may have been caught a few times over the 50+ years, but the glass is free of any significant scratches or chips. The bracelet carries some mysteries – the folding clasp is stamped for Rado, so either the clasp is by Rado or the whole bracelet is – except the outer folding clasp is stamped with a M which at first might be for Movado, but it more likely from the other sister company Mondia. If you wanted a leather strap instead that could be done. The bracelet is quite long and our sister website, SpareLinks.com, may have extra links if required. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown.
