The Mondia Top Second has an unusual complication that you need to see the video to appreciate. Model reference 97-1089-20
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The Zenith Movado group bought Mondia in 1969, and we have an advert from the back cover of February 1972’s edition of The Horological Journal, official magazine of the British Horological Institute featuring this watch.
CONDITION
It appears that a flashing red light is just abve six on the dial, but that is an illusion. It is in fact a mechanical device that looks to be an LED but it doesn’t illuminate – there is no battery in this watch. Instead the AS2063 calibre movement has been modified to have an extra wheel fitted, along with a double ended indicator, that spins. If you want to know more about how this works then this site has an excellent write up on the mechanism. The only thing that we can not find the answer to is why – why do you need this and a second hand? Maybe because it is just cool? That certainly seem to be the opinion of Fratello contributor Tomas Rosputinsky. Maybe Top Second would be a better complication without a conventional second hand? You also get with this movement a semi quickset date, positioned at 12, The 20 micron gold plated case is good save for one lug, that does have some damage. There is a stamp mark on the crown side, which initially looks like a ding but it is a in fact a stamp for PL and maybe a beetle logo? We can’t identify this, but we have taken a picture under the microscope to show this (and if you know what it is then please do contact us). The dial does have some patina. The case has 23 mm lugs, a size very uncommon in 1971 but being used more today by brands like Longines. We have fitted a new leather strap to the watch, so it is ready to wear.
This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
