When you needed an accurate stopwatch you either bought a Heuer or a Lemania. This Lemania Nero model is co signed with the retailers name.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The movement inside this stopwatch first appeared in 1968, and the ones we have found with military markings (which include the year issued) all seem to be in the early 1970’s.
Lemania were one of the leading stopwatch makers, when stopwatches were critical for so many work functions. These Nero models were used by the military, the BBC, the post office and various other institutions before the advert of quartz and LCD made stopwatches commonplace. One of the the less well known institutions is Philip Harris, who have been making and supplying science equipment since 1817. Who knows what discoveries their equipment helped in uncovering?
This stopwatch houses the Lemania 8000 7 jewel movement, a manually winding chronograph movement that times up to 30 minutes. Accuracy when doing science, editing a programme or launching an attack was important, so the movement had to be accurate. The case has plenty of corrosion to the chrome, which isn’t surprising given that it would have been used in a lab, and a case back sticker that we can not identify. The dial is very clean, and the stopwatch is working correctly.
One of these stopwatches appeared recently on the Netflix series The Crown according to this article on Hodinkee.
And it was a Lemania Nero that timed Roger Bannisters four minute mile. That watch sold in 1995 for £8.855 to Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.
