This slim and understated Universal Geneve Altesse model has a hand wound movement and could be the ideal dress watch. Model reference 842101.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The movement in this watch was in production between 1965 and 1975, but the ‘Fat U’ logo used on the dial and crown first started being used in 1971. The logo on the inside of the case back and on the movement, out of sight, is the pre 1971 logo, so with think this watch dates from the transition period, circa 1971.
CONDITION
This watch meets all the ‘rules’ of a good dress watch. Just two hands, zero complications, no lume or bracelet, and a slim case to slim under those cuffs. This watch has an added advantage if you are going to a black tie event, as the colours will match perfectly. The stainless steel case size is a little small for some, but not for all guys and many girls would like this size too if they want a bigger watch than the average 1971 ladies piece would be. The dial is very clean and clear to read – the hands are painted black, making for a very legible dial. The manual wound Calibre 42 movement was all designed and produced in house by Universal Geneve, and is working well. The name Altesse in French translates as Highness, but is also a variety of grape used in white wine. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown, crystal, clasp, buckle and strap.
