The Ultra-Chron was Longines line of most accurate watches, and runs at 36,600 beats per hour – or ten beats per second. Model reference 8309.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can date this watch to being made in circa 1971. The movement design was launched in 1967, but at that time Longines serial numbers were consecutive and by 1969/70 they became a little more random – like we have in this watch.
CONDITION
The Ultra-Chron can be considered undervalued in the current market. Maybe this is because Longines never got the watches officially certified chronometers, like the Omega Constellation or Rolex Datejust were. In the day they would have been competitors, yet today you will have to spend more on the Omega or Rolex in the vintage market. Longines have relaunched the Ultra-Chron models, and like this one the new watches are high beat movements that claim to be more accurate than a chronometer rated watch. New prices start form £3,450. This is a clean example in every way. The in house, automatic calibre 431 movement is running nicely and you can set the date via the semi quick set method (wind the hands past midnight, back to 20.00, and back past midnight). The movement is housed in a unibloc case made from stainless steel, and the movement is accessed via the acrylic crystal. Everything is clean and looking in great condition, but the dial does have some damage right at the bottom. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown and buckle.
