A high specification movement in a funky LeCoultre case, this Master Mariner HPG Model 9512 ticks a lot of boxes.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
JLC demand 250CHF for an extract of the archives, which is 40% of the watch value and therefore not worth us doing. However, looking at the styling and movement dates we think this will be from circa 1971. There is a service mark in the case back from 1973 that supports this.
CONDITION
The Caliber 164 movement seems to have been a joint collaboration between Jeager-LeCoultre, Doxa, Favre-Lueba, Girard-Perregaux and Zodiac, based on a A. Schild base. The idea was to drive down costs by working together as quartz took a hold of the market in the early 1970’s. Despite that intention, this is still a very high specification movement – Hi beat, 36.6kpbh automatic winding movement, quick set date, hacking seconds and a micro regulator. The same movement is found in the next model, 9513, that is nicknamed the Barracuda. That watch can fetch five times more than this 9512.
The 14k electroplated case is in good order, with just minor marks – the most noticeable is to the bottom of the 2pm lug, and this can not be seen when the watch is on the wrist. The bevels on the case edge are good and not showing wear to the plating. The original dial is clean, with nicely printed minute markers in alternate red and blue. The date can be quick set by pressing the crown in, whereas the English day wheel needs to be set via turning the crown. The crown isn’t signed. The high beat movement is running sweetly, and is a pleasure to listen to, though winding via the crown is quite stiff – with the automatic winding this isn’t an issue though. The watch is on a nice Hirsch leather strap.
