This Star Jewels, in a Ocean Pearl case, is one of the more affordable Enicar models. Model reference 160-54-02
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The Ocean Pearl name was registered in 1962, so this much post date that. But the logo used, the so called metal logo with double rings around Saturn dates to the early 1970’s. We have seen similar watches (but not this one) in the 1972 catalogue, so we have gone for one year older that that.
CONDITION
For watchmakers, Enicar had a short and star studded life. Only formed in 1950, and out of business due to the quartz crisis, they managed to make some great watches in between. The Sherpa Jet, Sherpa Graph and Sea Pearl watches all fetch into the thousands, with some now in excess of £10,000, and were worn by the likes of Jim Clark and Stirling Moss. This Star Jewels is a simpler three hander, so doesn’t command those high prices, but that doesn’t stop it being well made. You have a stainless steel case with a screw down case back to help the water resistance. The leaping shark logo on the caseback is clear, as is all the fine engraving around the edges which often are worn smooth. Inside is an in house calibre 160, which is actually nicely plated. Only the lucky watchmaker would ever know! The 17 jewel movement is running well. The dial is good but not perfect, and the hands are straight. The seconds hand has the spot of dark red paint still intact, and the new leather strap has been chosen to compliment this. The strap could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
