Description

This rare Enicar Sherpa Star, model number 147-02-01, still has the original bracelet and is in great condition.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

We don’t know of any database for Enicar watches, but luckily we have found an advert from 1971 featuring this model (albeit with a black dial).

CONDITION

This is a Swiss made Enicar, with an in house 24 jewel movement (calibre 164), from when Enicar were at the height of their success.  The quartz crisis of the 1970’s was very harsh on Enicar, who started to reduce the quality to compete on price and this strategy failed.  Many late seventies Enicar watches used bought in movements, and the ‘Indian Specials’ on eBay with repainted dials and these later movements should be treated with extreme care to prove they are original.

This watch, as well as having the day date feature (the Day wheel is in German, and the date is quick set by pushing in the crown.  This watch also has a sapphire glass, and this is the earliest watch we have seen with this feature.  The bark or hammered finish to the bezel is in very good order, and this is repeated on the NSA bracelet that is also signed Enicar on the sprung clasp (which is probably original but seems 1 mm too narrow at the lugs).  The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath.  The case back is very good, without the tool marks that Enicar cases often have and with the fine engraving in the centre (marked Sherpa Star) that later Enicar watches didn’t have, and is often worn off on these earlier ones.  The polished sides of the case do have some marks, but these are not seen on the wrist.  The original deep dished dial does have some light patina, but the overall condition is good.  The raised hour markers are fantastic.

The Sherpa chronographs are now beyond the reach of a lot of collectors.  At approximately 10% of a chronograph price, this feels like a value proposition.  One Enicar Sherpa Graph ‘Jim Clark’ is currently being advertised by a French seller for over £12,000!

This watch will be supplied with our Certificate of Authenticity.
