A classic dress watch from Zodiac, from a time when the Zodiac name was getting unrelated bad publicity.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The styling of this watch might make you think it was made in the late fifties or early 60’s, but the movement in the watch wasn’t available until 1970. This watch may be newer, but can’t be older than 1970.
CONDITION
The Zodiac killer terrorised San Francisco bay in 1968 and 1969, and was so called because this serial killer used a symbol that looks much like the Zodiac crosshair logo on his taunting letters to the police. But the watch company obviously couldn’t control this, and had other things to worry about – the looming quartz crisis would take the firm to the brink of failure. It was a shame, as Zodiac made some great and innovative watches. This is far more conservative than some of their designs though. Inside the steel case, behind the screw down case back, is a movement branded Zodiac 65 – but it is actually an AS1710 manual wind calibre with 17 jewels. It is all working as it should. The black dial is nice, and the wording Hermetic was to show the case was air tight. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case and movement.
