A cool 1970’s ChronOris men’s chronograph from Oris – and the inspiration for the mo9dern reissue in boutiques now.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
There are no serial numbers to date Oris by, but the ChronOris was launched in 1970 and ran until 1980. Most watches are sold in the biggest numbers close to the launch date, so we think this is from circa 1970.
CONDITION
This is the original model that the new, £1,450 ChronOris is based. The idea may have been based on the Omega Chronostop, another 60 second timer in the market just before the Oris was launched. Unlike the Omega, the Oris has an internal bezel that is set via the crown at 3 – the crown at 4 winds the watch and sets the time. The internal bezel acts as a minute counter – you line up the bezel with the minute hand before starting the stopwatch and the bezel scale can then be used to read the minutes passed. The pusher at 2 starts, stops and resets the stopwatch on the manual winding Oris calibre 725 movement. The blue dial is very nice indeed, with the orange chronograph central seconds hand adding the pop of orange that was almost mandatory for 70’s sports watches. The chromed case shows various marks commensurate with the watch being 50 years old, with the worst part being the chrome being rubbed on the chronograph pusher. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.

From 1st September 2021 we will be planting a tree for every watch we sell, working with the International Tree Foundation (Est 1922) to make this business positive on carbon. By buying anything pre owned you are effectively reusing what already exists, but this takes it further and makes us feel good.
