A good automatic movement is fitted in this Oris Sportstar, and it is all the better with the Tropic strap.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

It is not possible to accurately date Oris watches from this period without the original sales paperwork.  However we know the logo design on the case back was used between 1960 and 1979, and that the Sportstar name was registered in 1961 to Oris.  The movement production dates and styling make us think this was made circa 1970.

CONDITION

This example has pluses and minus points that should be weighed up.  On the positive side you have the funky design, an original blue dial, and a 25 jewel automatic 645KIF movement that most people would know as an ETA 2824-2, plus the strap that we will come onto in a second.  The downside is the chromed case has pitting on the back and sides, and quite heavy damage under 6 and 7 on the top of the case that is visible when being worn.  The movement is working well, and has semi quick set date that is functioning correctly too.   The dial is quite difficult to photograph, and the wrist shot captures the colour best.  The rubber strap is an 18mm Tropic blue, which has been paired to this watch as the colour, shape of the holes to the case shape and period are correct.  It could be swapped for a leather strap if preferred, but the Tropic strap is collectible in its own right as well as being very comfortable.
