HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The only watch company registered as Monumental that we could find was founded in 1964. We know the movement was first launched in 1965, but the styling hints at a slightly later year.
CONDITION
When you think of watches with kaleidoscope dials, as they are generally referred as, the first name to consider in usually the Ernest Borel range of cocktail watches like this one we had. We have never had any watches from Monumental before, but when they are this much fun we were not going to say no! This isn’t high horology, given the chrome case, but it is a decent movement inside when most people might expect a cheap pin pallet. The movement chosen is an AS1950, a 17 jewel Swiss lever manual wind calibre which is running well. The case has a screw down case back, with claims it was waterproof when new (this term was switched from roughly 1969 to water resistant by most makers). What looks like damage near the crown is actually the stamp of the case maker, which we haven’t been able to identify, but there are also various other marks on the case that are scratches. Obviously the main draw is the dial, and it is really simple in how it works – we describe this in the video. The blue rubber strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred.
