An affordable, automatic and distinctive men’s Mondaine watch which is New Old Stock (NOS).
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the production dates of the movement, combined with the styling, we think this watch was made circa 1970. We can not be more accurate on this example, but if you can help then please do contact us. Mondaine have been in existence since 1954, and used this logo from the beginning.
CONDITION
Mondaine are best known for making the Swiss clocks used at the railway stations, which they successfully transferred the design to SBB Railway watches. So successful was this, that the official company history webpage timeline doesn’t mention anything else until 2014! Despite this fail from the marketing department, this watch is evidence that the company was imaginative and continued to make nice watches.
This watch on paper has everything. Swiss made, with a 25 jewel movement housed in a water resistant, 36mm+ stainless steel case. The condition is superb – it arrived to us from a watchmaker as New Old Stock, an sadly overused term but this watch warrants that description. The clear protective sticker is still on the caseback, and barring the tiniest marks from storage this case is like new. The movement is a AS1903, which has semi quick set date at 6 on the blue dial. The blue dial is good, but the tritium lume plots have reacted slightly to the blue paint and if you look very closely you can see this. On the wrist it is very difficult to see though without a loupe. The leather strap is new, but can easily be swapped for a different style if preferred (EDIT – we spotted on the photos that some stitching is missing, so we will fit a plain black strap unless you specify otherwise).
