The very pick of the models, this three register Heuer Camaro with a Valjoux 72 movement is a collectors dream. Model reference 7220N.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
To the best of our knowledge no accurate serial number database exists for Heuer watches. However the Camaro was introduced in 1968 and ended in 1972, and the movements changed towards the end of the production run. This on has an earlier movement so we will not be too far wrong with circa 1970, and the brochure extract we have shown is also from 1970.
CONDITION
Sitting between the smaller Heuer Carrera, and the larger Autavia (and later Monaco), the Camaro filled a small gap in the Heuer product range. Not too long after this was launched Heuer decided to concentrate on the latest tech of automatic chronographs, and the Camaro was dropped.
We think we picked a great example of the best of the range. You had lots of choices when picking a Camaro – two or three registers, gold plated or stainless steel case, white or dark grey dial, tachymeter or not, bracelet or leather strap. We wanted what we considered to be the best of all worlds – dark grey dial, three registers, non tachygraph dial and leather strap. The last two choices could have gone either way, but once we decided we wanted a three register (designated 12, as it counts to twelve hours. The two register watches are Camaro 30’s, as they count to thirty minutes.), it had to be an earlier watch as that has the Valjoux 72 movement rather than the later Valjoux 7736. The Valjoux 72 has a column wheel action rather than the cam switched 7736, and the later movement was designed to be be good but cheaper to make. The Valjoux 72 however has powered iconic watches such as early Breitling Navitimers, the Universal Geneve Space Compax and we can not forget the Rolex Daytona – including Paul Newman’s Cosmograph Daytona that fetched $17.8m in 2017. That is serious pedigree.
On this example everything is working correctly. The case is unpolished, and you can still see the graining on the cushion cased bezel. The dark grey dial is beautiful and in very fine condition – these were not black that have faded as some people suggest, they were always charcoal grey as the 1969 catalogue confirms. The hands are all original. The leather strap is new, and has a signed Heuer buckle than may be more modern than the watch. The crown is also signed. This is as good an example as we have ever seen.
