This blue dialed Girard-Perregaux men’s watch is set off with a period bracelet. Hard to find another like this.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Girard-Perregaux make fantastic watches, but they are not easy to date. Low production numbers and no serial number reference datasheet that we know about don’t help. But from the movement and the styling we think this watch was made circa 1970.
JB Champion was a line of bracelets made by Jacoby-Bender in the USA. These are sought after, and as JB bracelets were used by Rolex and by the NASA Apollo astronauts. Strangely, they have nothing to do with JB Champion the Patek Philippe watch collector, as pointed out here when his watch sold for over $4m. This bracelet is long, but the clasp is not original (but it is secure). The AS1896 17 jewel automatic movement is unsigned and is working well. The date is semi quickset, by turning back to 8pm and back past midnight. The case and crown design, with the crown nearly hidden completely, does make it hard to hand wind this but the automatic winding is working fine so it is not an issue. The case and bracelet is in good order, with just minor scuff marks. The dial is superb, nicely contrasting with the rehaut.
