A rare example of the already rare Corum Buckingham, is a sterling silver case. Model reference 8905.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
It is very difficult to date such low volume models such as Corum accurately. The case is silver, stamped 0.925 which is the sterling standard but does not carry a British hallmark we could use to date it. The Buckingham model was launched in 1965, and the later watches have a narrower strap and sapphire crystals. Gold became very expensive post 1973, and many manufacturers offered cheaper metals like silver after this date but Corum still made these in both white and yellow gold, steel, or platinum – the ultra wealthy clearly had enough money to cover the extra gold costs so that doesn’t help. Circa 1970 is as close as we can go, but if you do know more then please do contact us.
CONDITION
We have had a couple of Buckingham models before, but never one with a silver case. This example also has the French cursive script for the hour markers, which normally would take up too much space but this dial has space to spare. This is a large vintage watch, but helped by being quite thin. Square cases always wear larger than a round case, as they cover more wrist area, and the feeling is emphasied by the wide strap. The watch came on an original Corum strap, but it was too far gone to be saved so we commissioned a new strap to be custom made for the watch, and the original buckle was transferred. The movement is stamped for Corum but has a ETA base, so servicing will never be too expensive. The case we have left with a bit of natural patina that silver gets, as this is easily cleaned off with a jewellers cloth but might take a lot time to get back. The crown has a blue cabochon polished stone set into it, which is not chipped.
