A highly original Rado Monte Rosa vintage men’s watch, complete with the Milanese signed bracelet that should fit most wrists comfortably.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The movement used in this watch was in production from 1969 to 1976, which gives us the boundaries for the production date. But given that this watch is designed to ape the oval cased Omega Dynamic, which was first introduced in 1967, we think this Monte Rosa watch was made circa 1969.
CONDITION
The aforementioned Dynamic was Omega’s best selling watch, so it is natural that other companies would try and take some of that magical design to their own ranges. So, like the Omega, this Monte Rosa has an oval 40mm case, but in the Rado it can be opened from the back. That also allowed Rado to fit a glass crystal instead of the plastic one used in the Dynamic. The signed crown sits flush with the case, and while technically you can hand wind the automatic movement it is difficult because of the case design. The grey dial is nice, with small plots of green to mark the minutes that are not noticed at first. The movement is signed Rado, but is an ETA 2783 automatic with quick set date, in top of the range 25 jewel specification. The case does have a few marks, and the glass also has a small scratch or two, but the bracelet is excellent with no twisting – twisting is common with this style of bracelet, but as this is not an integrated design that prevents that being a problem. The bracelet has a sliding clasp, so needs no tools to adjust, and has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown and clasp.
