Made by Accurist, the Old England watches were designed to be funky and different – the sixties flower power Swatches!
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The case back shows a year of 1967, but that is the year that Old England were formed. The Model J was launched late in 1969, in six different colours, so we know the watch can not be older than this.
CONDITION
The designer Richard Loftus was a clever chap – after graduating from Cambridge University he studied at Stamford for a year before returning home to England, and then he founded Old England watches. Designed as oversized, unisex statement watches they were perfect for fashionable people in the flower power era, and ended up selling in 40 different countries. Of course it did help that Richard Loftus’ parents owned Accurist, the brand they formed in 1946, so he had access to the technical and commercial side of the watch industry immediately. So popular were Old England watches that they made up 20% of Accurist’s business, and were also seen on the wrist of the famous – Twiggy, the Beatles, Princess Anne and Elizabeth Taylor (who had a black octagonal version, possibly also an Model J!). Behind the gold plated case back is a simple EB8800 pin pallet movement, which is working away nicely enough. These were never high end movements, but you can easily wear this watch and be comfortable it is on time to within a minute or so a day. The case may have been gold plated at one point, which looks to have been polished off at some point. The red dial with golden accents has just minor marks, and the crystal has no chips or cracks. The oversized leather strap is new.
