The kaleidoscopic effect of the Ernest Borel Cocktail watches second ‘hand’ is quite captivating, and unique. The static photos are no real representation – look at the video.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The Ernest Borel Cocktail range of watches were first launched in 1953, after registering the Patent in 1952. Initially they were only in ladies sizes, but we have an article from May 1954 showing they were about the launch the men’s sizes too. They sold well and continued to do so well into the sixties, with the kaleidoscope being particularly popular with hippies. In 1968 Ernest Borel joined Doxa and Cyma in the Synchron SA group, and this movement is stamped for Synchron. Those factors combined make us think this was from the very late sixties.
CONDITION
The idea is different, but the way it is made is simple. Instead of a seconds hand, this watch uses a clear disc to move instead of a seconds hand. This passes over a brass disc with the same pattern that is the minute hand, while the hour hand is more conventional and has a wide tip – this is painted red and the only part of the hand you see. This particular watch also has a ring of crystals that revolve, set under indentations under the crystal, which add an extra visual effect. But the video is the best way to see the effect this has. You can also see the Synchron 26 (FEF 6680) movement via an exhibition case back, which was far from common. If you look through an eyeglass you can see on the outer part of one bridge of the movement a service mark, as there was no where else to put it! The Stelux bracelet looks contemporary and is 10k gold filled, hence shows minimal wear. You could always opt for a leather strap for this Ernest Borel cocktail watch too.

By buying anything pre owned you are effectively reusing what already exists, but this takes it further and makes us feel good.
