This Vulcain Chronograph will tick many boxes in a collectors eyes, with a treat inside the case too. Model reference V 1321 A.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The movement in this watch was first used in 1916, and ran all the way until 1974. This is a later version with shock protection, and that, combined with the styling, makes us believe this was made in the late 1960’s. We can not be 100% sure it was 1968, but if you can help please do contact us.
CONDITION
Vulcain are better known for making the Cricket alarm watches worn by many a US president, but on this evidence they should have made more of these chronographs too. The reverse panda dial is very attractive, with just a slight pop of red covering the first 6 minutes of the chronograph minute counter – international calls were charged in three minute blocks, so that was the thinking. the lume has all evenly faded, but most is missing from the tip of the minute hand. The all stainless steel case is stamped waterproof, but no vintage watch should ever go near water. But the diver on the screw down case back is a nice addition still. The cushion shaped case is reminiscent of the Heuer Camaro, which was launched in 1968. Inside is a very pretty Valjoux 23 movement, and this was the base for many models up to and including the Valjoux 72C found in million dollar watches. Everything is working correctly. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
