First designed in 1928, the Atmos is as close to perpetual motion as we have got – this is remarkable and not a carriage clock! Model reference 526-5.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number we can estimate this clock was made circa 1967, according to this website. This model was in production from 1955 to 1984.
CONDITION
This clock never needs winding, not does it take batteries. Instead it gathers energy from temperature changes, and as little as one degree Celcius temperature change between 15 and 30 degrees will power the clock for up to 48 hours. In order to do this it has to be incredibly efficient, and one amazing stat’ is that to light a 15 watt light bulb using just the energy from these Atmos clocks, you would need six million of them. Nearly a century on, they are still in production and start new from £10,200.
They operate slowly and silently, and if air were pure they have a theoretical service life of 7,000 years (air isn’t pure though!). There is even a spirit level built into the base to set it up perfectly. To set the time you move the minute hand forward with your fingertip. When moving the clock or setting the time, always move the locking lever from left to right which stops the balance from turning.
We have the signed original fitted case for the clock, which isn’t cosmetically isn’t great but still good to have. However, due to the fragility of this timepiece we will not be shipping this clock, and it is only available for collection from our Leicestershire offices in England. The advantage of this is that you can see the clock working (as you can in the video), and we can give you a little help in getting used to it.
The glass is all good, but the brass does have some wear. The clock keeps great time, but the adjusting lever is not central and it might take some time for you to set the clock to your atmosphere while the clock settles in. It is not something to be rushed.
This clock will be supplied with the original presentation box, and our Certificate of Authenticity.
