This men’s Wittnauer has an interesting design, designed to be be different but not shocking, and it is backed by a nice Swiss movement.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The movement used in this watch was exclusive to Wittnauer, and was first used in 1965 so this watch can not be older than that.
CONDITION
Established in 1885, Wittnauer have an interesting history but much of it was associated with Longines. Now it is owned Bulova, but Wittnauer used to be pioneers – Amelia Earhart used Wittnauer instruments in her plane, and they were also in consideration to be the official watch of astronauts (alongside the Rolex Daytona and the Omega Speedmaster). This is a simpler piece, but still interesting. The date at six sits in a wide, brushed external circle on the dial, while the hands and hour markers are more like a bullseye in the centre. The C11WS seventeen jewel movement is a pleasure to wind via the original crown, and has semi quick set date. The dial is original and has a little patina, but nothing too bad. The case is gold plated, but Wittnauer took the time and money to gold fill the bezel – so little sign of wear is visible with the naked eye. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown.
