Hamilton called this the R R Special not after Rolls Royce, but after their highest quality RailRoad watches of previous decades.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Updated Information. We now understand that these watches were fitted with extra fine micrometric regulation to meet and exceed rail road standards. The watches were introduced on 7th September 1962, at a price of $89.50 on the leather band. We previously thought this watch was made circa 1965, but circa 1963 now seems more likely.
CONDITION
There is a nice write up on the three different R R Special watches produced by Hamilton by our friends at electricwatches.co.uk here. You can see that our watch has the original red hand with the lightening bolt tail, and that this being the model 50 it is all in stainless steel. The fixed bezel is marked for different hours on this model too. The crown is at 4, and it is the original signed crown. Hamilton were the first to introduce a battery powered watch, the Calibre 500A, and this watch uses the later (and easier to maintain) 505A which is running well. The second hand stutters around a little – not as smooth as a mechanical watch, and not in one second intervals like a quartz. This is a watch that wears well, 99% of people won’t know you are wearing something special, but then you will meet a watch collector and their eyes will light up. The leather strap is new, and has a later Hamilton buckle fitted to it. The screw down case back does have a few tool marks that are obviously not visible when the watch is being worn.
